The Growing Problem of Catalytic Converter Theft in Richmond

Catalytic converter theft has been on the rise in Richmond and the surrounding areas. This precious automotive component is an essential part of your vehicle’s exhaust system, helping to convert harmful pollutants into less toxic substances before they are emitted from the tailpipe. Thieves target these converters due to the valuable metals they contain, such as platinum, palladium, and rhodium. With the increasing prices of these metals on the global market, catalytic converter theft has become a lucrative business for criminals.

The process of stealing a catalytic converter is relatively quick and straightforward. Thieves typically use a battery-powered saw to cut the exhaust pipe and remove the converter, often causing significant damage to the vehicle. The theft of catalytic converters not only leaves car owners with an expensive repair bill but also exposes them to potentially harmful emissions until the issue is resolved.

Why Skilled Labour and Expertise are Essential for Catalytic Converter Repairs

When faced with a stolen catalytic converter, vehicle owners must find a reliable and experienced mechanic shop to perform the necessary repairs. Unfortunately, not all mechanic shops possess the required skills and expertise to handle such complex tasks. Fabricating and welding tubing, as well as dealing with missing sensors, requires specialized knowledge and precision. Here’s why:

  • fabricating and welding tubing; replacing a stolen catalytic converter involves creating custom tubing to fit your vehicle’s specific make and model. Skilled fabricators and welders are necessary to ensure that the replacement tubing matches the original design and provides optimal performance.
  • Dealing with missing sensors; often, thieves not only steal the catalytic converter but also damage or remove vital sensors connected to it. These sensors monitor your vehicle’s emissions and performance, making it crucial to replace and recalibrate them correctly. An experienced mechanic will know how to handle these delicate components to avoid further damage or complications.

When Should I do an Oil Change?

Oil changes.

5,000 km vs 8000 km vs 10,000km or even 25,000km, and everything else in-between. Which one is it?

The only way to settle the age ole dispute is to consult your owner’s manual. The previous standard was every three months, or 5000 km, whichever milestone you reach first but newer vehicles might suggest an oil change at every 7500-8000 km under ideal conditions.

However, if you tend to drive under severe driving conditions, such as: driving in stop-and-go traffic in hot weather, driving at low speeds for long distances, driving on debris-covered roads including dust, salt, mud, and sand, and towing/transporting heavy items with your vehicle – you might need an oil change sooner than the recommended.

If you choose to forgo your oil change, especially while driving under severe conditions, your oil will get dirtier and dirtier. Dirty oil is thicker and abrasive, and can cause more wear to your engine. Given enough time, the parts in the engine will become too hot, causing the engine to run less efficiently and eventually, warping and wearing out the components. If you leave things as it is at this point for an extended period, your entire engine will ultimately need to be replaced.

With that being said, oil in an engine is essential. It keeps things running smoothly and without it, the heat generated from metal-on-metal friction can cause some serious damage. Fortunately, changing your own oil is not as daunting as it may seem to be – a little messy maybe (if you’re new to it), but definitely DIY-able.

Summer vs. Winter Tires

Summer has finally arrived in Vancouver! It almost felt like winter would never leave us, but now that it’s mostly gone (fingers crossed) it’s time to dust off your shorts and more importantly, switch up your tires. But what’s the difference between summer and winter tires? There are three essential differences between the two types of tires: rubber compound, structure, and tread pattern.

1. Rubber Compound

Winter tires stay supple in the cold thanks to a higher natural rubber content. A softer rubber provides better traction on the road surface, allowing for better grip and handling. Summer tires, as well as all-seasons, have a lower natural rubber content and tend to become stiff in temperatures below 7 degrees C. However, they are able to adapt in warmer temperatures for better handling in dry and wet roads.

2. Structure

Winter tires also feature thousands of tiny grooves, also known as sipes, and an increased number of biting edges to increase traction by biting into snow, slush, and ice. Summer tires, on the other hand, have less sipes but specially designed tread bars to provide more grip and minimize aquaplaning.

3. Tread Pattern

Winter tires have deeper tread depths help to reduce snow build up and the unique tread pattern that channels snow and slush, and expelling water. Summer tires have simpler tread patterns that offers a larger braking distance.

Summer                                                                                                          Lower natural rubber content that softens in milder temperatures, allows rubber to adapt to both dry and wet roads.                                                                                                                                                                        Fewer sipes, but have specially designed tread bars to combat aquaplaning and allow for more grip on both we and dry road surfaces.                                                                                                                                                   Simpler tread pattern that contributes to excellent handling and a greater braking distances.
Winter                                                                                       Higher natural rubber content allows tire to remain flexible in colder temperatures for better traction on slippery road surfaces        Increased number of sipes and biting edges for better grip on ice and snow                                                                                                                                                    Deeper treads and unique tread pattern to help channel snow and slush, and ensure that there is enough traction to push a vehicle forward on snow and ice covered roads.

With that being said, it is important to mount the right set of tires for the right season. Driving on winter tires during the spring would wear them down faster! So if you haven’t done so already, book your vehicle in to re-mount your summer or all-season tires.

P.S. Did I mention we also offer storage services for your tires?

Out with the old, in with the gold!

Even though the rain and snow has been relentless, it is never too early to start preparing for this year’s racing season!

The Cricket is getting a few new upgrades, starting with freshly painted rims for some new Toyo Proxes R88R.

As tires get stiff with age, it is best to get fitted with new ones about every three years and the Cricket is due for a new set this season. If you’re looking for a set that is track-specific, go for something with a little more traction, but anything consistent and reliable is good too!
